How AI works in Xandria

AI in Xandria works like a careful research assistant: it reads from your library, shows you where every answer came from, and asks before changing your work. It runs on the model you choose, so it's ready once you've set one up.

Your model, your choice

Xandria doesn't come with an AI service of its own. You choose the model:

  • a local model running on your own computer with Ollama, so nothing leaves your machine;
  • an OpenAI-compatible provider you already use, with your own key;
  • the Codex CLI (Windows, macOS and Linux) or the OpenCode CLI (tested on Linux), using your existing sign-in.

See Set up AI.

Answers you can check

Ask a question and the AI searches your library for the passages that answer it. The answer names the book and page behind each point, so you can open the page and check. It answers from your books, not from memory. See Ask your library.

You approve every change

The AI can do real work: edit a note, build a Canvas board, file a book into a Collection, write a Wiki page. By default, each change waits for you:

  • You see exactly what will change, such as the lines added to and removed from a note, before anything is saved.
  • Choose Approve to apply it or Reject to drop it.
  • If you're editing the same note, the AI works on your current draft and never overwrites unsaved text.
  • Anything applied can be undone.

Looking around doesn't need approval: the AI can open a book, scroll, turn pages or show you a search without asking, so you can watch it work.

If you trust it with routine edits, you can turn on Automatically apply agent actions in Settings → AI → Permissions. The AI can't turn this on for itself.

See Let AI edit Notes and Canvas.

What stays private

  • Conversations stay on your computer. Chats with the Agent aren't synced to your other devices.
  • The AI sees only what you can see: your library, your highlights and your notes.
  • What's sent to the model: the question and the passages it needs. With a local model, that never leaves your computer. With a provider, it goes to that provider under your account and their terms.
