Local mode

In Local mode your library lives on this computer only. You get the whole of Xandria (the reader, highlights, Notes, Canvas, Collections, Domains, search and AI) without a connection, and nothing leaves the computer unless you set up an AI provider that runs elsewhere.

You're in Local mode when you choose Use without an account, or when you're signed in with sync off. Settings → Account shows which: Sync is off means Local mode.

Add your books

  1. Open Manage Library from the rail, then Import.
  2. Under Folders on This Device, choose Link Folder… and pick a folder, or drop a folder onto the panel.
  3. Choose what Xandria should do with the folder's books. All of these are off unless you turn them on:
    • Full-Text Search: find words inside these books.
    • Semantic Search: find passages by meaning, using your semantic model.
    • Metadata Suggestions: suggested titles, authors and other details, which wait in Review until you apply them.
  4. Xandria adds every PDF, EPUB, DjVu, CBZ and CBR file it finds.

Xandria reads your books where they are. Your folder is only read, never changed: no files are moved, renamed, copied or deleted. A linked folder keeps being watched while Xandria is open, so new books you put in it appear on their own; Scan Now checks straight away.

Unlink… removes a folder from Xandria. The files on disk stay where they are.

If a book's file goes missing

If you move or delete a book's file, or unplug the drive it's on, the book stays in your library with its highlights and notes, marked unavailable. Plug the drive back in, or choose Locate… to point Xandria at the file's new place.

Xandria never removes a book just because its drive is disconnected.

Search in Local mode

Search covers titles, your highlights and your notes straight away. Searching inside your PDFs and EPUBs, and searching by meaning, work once you turn on Full-Text Search and Semantic Search for a folder. Everything is searched on this computer, offline.

To turn them on for a folder you've already linked, open its menu in Folders on This Device and choose Processing…. The New files tab applies to books added from then on; the Existing files tab queues the books already there.

What needs an account

  • Sync to your other computers, phone and tablet.
  • Sharing Notes and boards with other people.

To move a Local library into your account, sign in and choose Add to my account (First launch and sign in), then turn on sync.

Keep your library safe

Your Local library exists only on this computer, so it's only as safe as the computer. Turning on sync keeps a copy in your account and on your other devices. Until then:

  • Close Xandria normally rather than ending it from the task manager.
  • Don't delete Xandria's data folder.

Next: Turn on sync

Your library. Your reading. Your work.
